Today I’m so excited to share with you all a little DIY project I’ve been wanting to do for a while now!
Not many people know this, but I spent my entire pregnancy renovating and living in a construction zone. We redid most of our main floor and I was without a kitchen almost the entire time. We got things ready for the little one just in time and needless to say I haven’t gotten around to renovating again since she’s blessed us with her presence. I have however been stalking Instagram accounts getting inspired for future projects, one of which was Milton & King Wallpapers , I’ve been seeing their beautiful wallpapers and murals all over my feed and been anxiously waiting to get my hands on some. Well the time has come, so here is my review on the Milton & King!
We have a sun room off our living room that we use as a play area for Ellie. It’s beautiful because it brings in lots of light but the whole house is a lot of “white on white on white” as my husband would say. Don’t get me wrong, I am a sucker for light and airy but I wanted to add a bit of depth to the room. There’s also one wall in there that I thought would be great for shooting pictures on because the lighting is on point and it’s really the only blank wall in our home left. I had planned on doing a pine plank wall there but of course I didn’t have the time or energy for that, let’s be honest. Then I came across the white washed, timber wall paper on Instagram and was thrilled to see the same effect I wanted for a backdrop but in a easier application. And this option is so much safer than the bumpy plank walls I was considering for Ellie when she is climbing all over. I know she’s bound to bump into the wall eventually.
Ordering: The first thing I technically did was watch this easy how to guide to ensure I had all the materials and steps in hand so I knew what I was in for. I reached out to Milton & King and sent them my wall dimensions and they were kind enough to ensure I had enough rolls. They even have a handy chat option. We placed our order and received it very quickly! The packaging held up perfect and each roll was nestled in undamaged, which is always a concern with shipping paper products. The paper feels high quality and I know it will last the time of time. Actually that’s another great perk I discovered; if you do end up getting the walls dirty you are able to wipe them down.
The Process: Next we had to even out the wall because the former people living here had added some fake brick like putty onto it and you need a flat surface for wallpaper to stick too of course. So we scraped that off, mudded, and sanded. This was probably the worst part of it all because of the previous DIY someone had done. Once we had a smooth surface my husband followed the super straight forward video and away he went (I supervised). You can’t tell this in these photos but the wall extends into a door and kind of dead space, but for this purpose of this blog I am just focusing on the section of the wall we want to use as a photo backdrop/feature wall. This entire process took about three hours to do the measuring, cutting and applying. We finished just in time to test out the wall for shooting some fun photos for my cousins maternity pictures (I should really note I am a hobby picture taker…I wouldn’t call myself a photographer but it is a passion of mine and I love taking pictures for Instagram, this blog and family and friends.)
We decided to put the wallpaper up vertical to give the room some height and run it opposite of the direction our floors are running. I must say that our wall is still not completely level unfortunately but I LOVE how you can’t tell at all once this paper is on. The planks somehow helped to hide the walls imperfections.
The result: It is exactly what we were going for, if not more stunning! It adds a subtle character to the room without being imposing. It reminds me of birch trees and the details in the wood are incredible. I love how it will double as a great backdrop wall. Our daughters first birthday is coming up so we will absolutely be shooting her smash cake and other photos in front of it for her floral garden party. The neutral tones work with any picture goals we are going for whether it be fashion, family, baby or products. And when it’s not being used for photos its just a simply, stunning feature wall in our home.
