As a new mom I’ve collected any moments of free time to do research for the babe to try to find out the best tips or products for her. One dilemma I encountered was finding something to make baby food, specifically good purees. I knew I wanted to try making my own food but I didn’t have a food processor or great blender.
At first I discovered that there are processors made just for pureed baby food out there. Shortly after I learned there are processors that will not only puree but steam the food too! But wait, then I found one that will puree and steam TWO different things at the same time. The options and dollar signs were endless. I started to wonder if there were any cons to these. I read a few reviews where people said their steamers got moldy and were sometimes tricky to clean so I decided to go back to the basics and stick with the regular baby food processor. I started wondering if a regular food processor would do this. Surely you would get more use in the long one out of those? While I imagine you could use the baby food processor long term, you would still be pulling out a baby branded device long after your baby isn’t so babyish anymore (although always a baby in your heart :)).
After some more research and watching YouTube videos on top reviews for food processors that will puree baby food I came across the Vitamix. At first thought I was in no way going to justify spending that kind of money on a blender…but then I learned not only does it puree, it blends (blends GREAT at that) AND it makes soup. I mean…how awesome is that? Then I found out you can order refurbished machines direct from Vitamix for a fraction of the cost and will still come with a 5 year warranty. Thinking long term, I could justify the investment.
While it was definitely a splurge, I haven’t regretted it at all. This is something I will definitely use every day. And if my baby doesn’t like purees, I still like smoothies/juice and soup! I have tested it by making a soup as well already. Mind you, i wouldn’t recommend throwing every dying vegetable into it to see how it tastes like I did, but I turned it onto high for five minutes and just like that, hot SOUP! I could see this working great for butternut squash soup or tomato soup, the creamier ones.
I ended up making a broccoli cheddar soup and thai soup that comes in the recipe book and they were excellent. We have not yet introduced our baby to solids yet but I will be sure to post my experience with that and any recipes we try.
I would love to hear what baby food makers you have all bought and/or any of your babies fav purees?
